LWR TT Event 2 – Southern Counties Cycling Union Time Trial GS/334 Bletchingley

Event 2 began in the sleepy town of Godstone, where between 7:30 and 8am about 22 Ladies crept into the HQ barn to pick up their race numbers. I’m not sure if it was so quiet because it was so early or because everyone was just thinking about how hilly this course would be; they don’t call it the ‘Hardriders’ TT for nothing!

It was certainly windier than the previous week but that didn’t stop people riding some cracking times. The SCCU organisers were very efficient and the times were quickly up and equally importantly there was a fine selection of cakes.

The event and our Aero1 category was masterfully won by Mathilde Pauls of Sigma Sport who beat the hour coming in at 59:36. It was fantastic to hear Mathilde sharing her knowledge and experience at HQ as newer riders quizzed her on how she got quite so fast. Lizzy Brama and last year’s winner Katie Crowe also achieved impressive times 1:02:16 and 1:02:50 respectively.

Sarah Phelps winner of Aero2 and Kathryn! Who got 2nd place in A2 🙂

Our Aero2 category winner was Sarah Phelps of Crawley Wheelers; after a week in the sun in Portugal (and probably some hard work over winter) Sarah was flying up those hills coming in at 1:04:07. I was just over a minute behind her and Jennifer Crouch from London Dynamo, a minute behind me.  Sarah and I both got into TT a few years ago with the SEWTTS league and we are both delighted to see how successful the LWR league is proving to be in encouraging more women to compete.

The top two riders in Aero3 were pretty close; Cat Benger won the category at 1:06:02 followed by Rebecca Goodwin 46s later. Both Cat and Rebecca are new to TT and are riding under ‘LWR CC’ a club set up and affiliated to CTT so anyone in the league can take part. It was fantastic chatting at HQ and hearing how the LWR setup had encouraged these strong riders to sign up.

Road Bike Cat winner Jacintha Hamilton-Love

Road Bike Cat winner Jacintha Hamilton-Love

Our Road Bike category was once again the largest, with nine riders taking part. Jacintha Hamilton-Love of Dulwich Paragon, taking part in her first TT, achieved a breathtakingly fast 1:02:41. This is on a road bike, beating all those in Aero2&3, seriously impressive. Also striking was Gosia Cyganowska of Rapha CC who came 2nd with 1:05:06; Gosia was also 2nd last week in a very strong field. Dulwich also took third place in the Road Bike cat; Alex Rose put in a strong ride with 1:08:35.

Road Bike Vet category was won by Katia Hadaschik also of Dulwich Paragon, who borrowed a friend’s bike to ride because hers has already been shipped to Spain. Chapeau!

This was a great 2nd event; those who rode last week are really starting to get to know each other and also welcome those riding their first TT. We’ll start totting up the team points too as competition begins to hot up as the series progresses. Our next LWR event is on 14th April at a 10 mile course near Marlow, Bucks followed a week later on 23rd April with a 25 miler (the roundabout course!) near Horsham. Follow the links on our calendar to sign up to the remaining races!
