A race report from the sixth LWR 2017 crit/RR league crit race, hosted by SCC Hackney programme of Saturday races at Velopark, at the 2012 Olympic site in the heart of East London. Report and pics are a joint effort from the LWR team racing and marshalling. League standings will be up ASAP on the crit/rr results page.

LWR Hackney primavera 27052017So far most of the LWR crit/RR league races have been lucky on the weather front, and Saturday was no different, when the strong field of 28 riders was greeted with bright sunshine on the largely flat, non-technical and new-built circuit at Lee Valley Velopark. Temperatures were hot at around 26 degrees, the sun was out and guns were out all round.

The e1234 classification of the race meant that was a real variety of women racing, with quite a few 2nd cats and even a couple of 1st cats in the mix alongside the 3/4s who are eligible for the crit/RR league points. It’s always valuable to race with more experienced and attacking riders, although the strong headwind on the finishing straight meant that it was going to be harder to make a break stick.

lwr-hackney-primavera3-27052017.jpgRacing started with some early attacks, led by Jayne Paine of Willisden CC and different members of Les Filles, but as no one bridged to them they remained solo, and were always brought back by the bunch. Team OnForm riders, and Liz Hughes of CC London kept the pace high on the front. Despite the high pace, and perhaps because of the non-technical circuit, the bunch stayed completely together until the final lap bell.

A final attack from Jayne Paine strung the bunch out, and she looked to be just able to hold her solo attack to the line but was caught just at the last minute, swamped at the finish line but still held onto a 3rd place. The final top 10 were

1. Charlene Du Preez – VC Londres
2. Josie Shepherd – Project 51
3. Jayne Paine – Willisden CC
4. Eeva Sarlin – Velo Eclipse
5. Elisabeth Anderson – CC London
6. Elizabeth Hughes – CC London
7. Lucy Harper – Team OnForm
8. Georgia Bullard – Jadan-Weldtite
9. Alicia Speake – Team OnForm
10. Delia Beddis – Les Filles QOM

Congrats to all who raced! Updated league standings can be found on the crit/rr results page. One final race to go in the crit/RR league now! Everything can change in the last race, so make sure you’re signed up and ready to go!
